RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] car-deep cycle

Silky,

One very important item that can very easily be overlooked when selecting
batteries for your submersible is the reserve capacity for emergency
situations. You should have enough power to run the scrubber, an underwater
telephone (If you are going to have one) and some emergency lights and
whateve other emergency gear that requires battery power such as the O2
monitors or CO2 monitors for at least 72 hours (ABS). If you don't want to
go that far at least you should consider having enough powere reserves to
run your emergency scrubber for at least 24 hours.

To properly size your batteries you also need to do a power consumption
analysis based on the equipment you expect to have on board.

I hope this helps,

Hugo

Hi Silky,

You could use car batteries as long as you do not
discharge them very far ,fast and accept the
replacement cost of needing new batteries more often.

Marine cycle or deep cycle batteries are better for
submersible applications. The only trade off is they
give off a lower amprage drain then car batteries. Its
a trade off between amprage and time to discharge.

Regards,
Ray

hey,has anyone here been using car batterys in
psubs? Please correct me if im wrong.A car's battery is
designed to provide a very large amount of current for
a short period of time. This surge of current is
needed to turn the engine over during starting. Once
the engine starts, the alternator provides all the
power that the car need. To achieve a large amount of
current, a car battery uses thin plates in order to
increase its surface area. A deep cycle battery is
designed to provide a steady amount of current over a
long period of time. A deep cycle battery is also
designed to be deeply discharged over and over again
(something that would ruin a car battery very
quickly???). To accomplish this, a deep cycle battery
uses thicker plates.so i cant use the intended car
batterys ???
