Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Experimental WW2 rubber coated U boat.

The German "Albrich" rubber skin on WWII submarine was designed against
sonar. The two layer of 2 mm rubber (4 mm together) was designed that
way that the first layer on the hull has many holes and the outside
layer not. This skin reduce sonar waves reflection in the area of 10-18
khz to about 17% of the original reflection. The results are differnet
under higher waterpressure or other temperation. The biggest problem was
that during this time no real good glue was available to fix the rubber
for longer periods on the hull under the influence of seawater,
temperation etc. There is no description in german sources that it works
also against radar. Another long period problem could be maybe rust of
the hull under the rubber - but during the time the german take this
experiments the lifetime of a Uboat was just 3 Month - so this was not a
real problem for the navy..

There was another anti reflection Material against Radar but this cover
only the top of the "snorkel" and was called "Schornsteinfeger".

best regards Carsten, Germany
