Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] wire and acrylic

Bill,
My design has evolved quite a bit from the model that is in the pictures.   I've changed the dimensions of the sub to account for a better center of gravity.  I have also changed from two thrusters to one which will be located centered and on the bottom of the sub.  And I have eliminated the dual rudders in favor of one rudder directly behind the thruster.  And I have a different viewport, which is essentailly an acrylic ring.  I've started on the main body of the sub.  But I ain't very far along.

I have tried to come up with a design that addresses the problem of freeboard.  With most small subs it is not safe to open the hatch unless you are in very calm water.  I also try to address the issue of cost.

Hi Brian.

Your sub project site is really nice. Great easy to understand construction photos. I think I answered my own question about what ferro cement is. Some kind of resin I presume from viewing your construction photos.
Both your current design and the old E.S.M.E. design are really imaginative. I see you even used a cad machine for the early design. Am I understanding correctly from your "flipped" photos
at your site, that the sub will float vertically like a long fishingline float bobber on the surface and then you will enter from a hatch in the stern, and then changing the subs attitude from vertical
to horizontal to use it? Are you still in the model evaluation stage or starting to work on the full size model yet? I also see you will be using your acrylic as a dome in the rearward pressure hull.
Have you calculated what your acrylic thickness should be for the depths you plan to dive it to yet? Ah, there I go again asking a million questions. Lol. Great job Brian.

Kindest Regards,
Bill Akins.

Bill,
Here is a link to some pictures:  http://www.ojai.net/ojaibees/index.htm  However I'm not sure how much longer this link will be up since I've changed ISP's.

Hi Brian.

What is ferro-cement? Some kind of metal (ferro?) mixed with some kind of epoxy? What do you plan to use it for? What are you using that "hand drawn wire" for?

Are you going to blow up your heated acrylic with air to make a dome using those ovens? Or just use them to bend the acrylic to make a standard windshield/watershield?
What kind of design is your sub Brian? Wish you the best of luck with it.

Kindest Regards,
Bill Akins.

Hi All,
Making some progress with finding materials for ferro-cement - spring manufacturers know all about the type of wire that I need for construction.  Six months of hunting for this "hard drawn wire" !   Also spring manufacturers have very precise ovens for making springs, This will be good for annealing acrylic, He said I could use his oven for that purpose when I'm ready.
