Do you mean the electrolyte somehow compresses?
Or do you mean the electrolyte takes up less space because the hydrogen and oxygen get seperated and make for less water volume in the batteries?
If that is so, then wouldn't the gas of the hydrogen and oxygen take up more space than the original water they were before they were seperated?
I mean, wouldn't the hydrogen and oxygen take up more space volume in gaseous form than they did as water? Wait, no that can't be it because then there wouldn't be
a vacuum at all but actually a positive pressure in the battery pod. Arrrgh!

As a battery discharges, the electrolyte displaces less space. The larger the volume of electrolyte, the more vacuum is created.
