Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Deep Quest for sale on Ebay...

I once saw a houseboat made from a converted amphibian aircraft in a marina in Ft. Lauderdale Fl. I think it was a former navy PBY catalina with wings and tail removed and made into a houseboat.
Very cool. But what a shame to see them strip this sub and make it into one. The work that I can only imagine that went into constructing this sub and they strip it out and make it into a
houseboat. What pity. I had often though of purchasing 3 large tanks and by weighting the middle one and having the other two on the surface for pontoon floatation the middle one would serve to be
an underwater houseboat with an access tube and hatch that ran to the surface for entry and a deck topside. No provision for diving, just to have the apartment habitation area underwater with lights and portholes. But that would be something built expressly for that purpose.

To strip a sub and make it INTO a houseboat to me is kind of like using the statue of liberty as a grain silo. Lol.

Kindest Regards,
Bill Akins.

Hi Brian,

It would be great it you could run recon on this one.

The main thing to check for is the pressure-vessels.
Things like are they pressent and intact (make sure they where
removed to make more room for the 'house boat').  There should
be atleast two spheres, hopefully there would also be a third
section which would by cylinderical.

If the pressure vessels are present, has anybody cut holes in
them or in some way compromised the integerity of the pressure
vessels?  Holes for RV hookups or what ever?  If the pressure
vessel isn't there, maybe they know where it is (junkyard maybe?).

If the pressure vessels are present I'd guess just about every
original piece of equipment has been striped out to make room
for house boat stuff.  But if there is any original equipment
still intact and installed, please note it.  Maybe ask if they
have any of the original parts or know where they went.  Does
the pressure vessel have view parts?

The ballast system and trim system have probably been removed
to make room for house boat stuff as well.  Good riddens to
the mercury (well, I hope it's gone).  There would be a forward
and aft trim tank (but probably removed...).

The people selling might know nothing about it of course.  Anyway
I'll buy you a beer for researching it, no matter what condition
it's in.  And if it's a house boat, then wow, can you imagine
being young and single, and paying no rent because you living on
a submarine house boat.  Sweet! :-)

Thanks,
  Ian.
P.S.: Take you for a dive in it if I buy it!
