Landmark sub takes last dive

THE rusting hulk of an ex-Royal Navy submarine has sunk while on her last
journey from Portsmouth to a shipbreaker in Turkey. The 43-year-old Oberon
class boat HMS Oracle was lost in thousands of feet of water after
foundering off Gibraltar.

She was being towed from Pounds' scrapyard at Tipner by a German-registered
tug when disaster struck in rough seas.
Oracle - a Tipner landmark for years - began leaking catastrophically,
possibly through a damaged metal plate or a worn propeller shaft aperture,
and had to be cut adrift and left to the bottom of the ocean. 03 December
