Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] manipulator

Hi Pierre 'the claw' Poulin,

I for one would to use anything you produce - i had really wanted to include a manipulator (and hadnt totally discounted it), but figured the control would be beyond me (i figure on/off and open/closed should be my aspirations at this early stage). this maybe puts it back into range again :)

a few questions:

1. do the hydraulics work at pressures above ambient, or from 1 ATM, or am I missing something? My concern is that the external pressure is going to be high - wont this fight against the manipulator? or is the hydraulic pressure so high ambient is negligible? does it rely instead on boosting hydraulic pressure from ambient?

2. how do you normally control these? I think finger control is far too complex, but the gripper could maybe be controlled through a 'data mitt' rather than a 'data glove'? do these just work like waldos?

3. could things like OTS car haydraulics (eg power steering) be used to drive these systems

4. can the whole arm be jettisoned if it gets fouled or tangled?

5. what do you do with samples? hang on to them until you surface? put in a hopper (open or closed)? and related - just what do you want to use the arm for? - aside from 'it just seems like a kewl/sensible thing to have' (which is why i originially wanted it)

cheers
peter

Hi Dan,
Hello Marten,

I did build 3 manipulators at work so i have some experience with them. But
nothing for under-water...

What type of manipulator are you looking for? Maybe we can share plans and
drawings? I was thinking something like the arm that we see at the back of
excavators but with a gripper at the end. What about you?

Yes, I will use a canister type with air and oil together but with a
flexible diaphragme (spelling) to separate the oil from the air. And it will
be a close circuit. The trick is to use two canisters and switch from one to
the other with the returning oil.

Let me know what you think! We could make ours plans available to all.

Pierre "manipulator" Poulin
