I would not try lead shot - it would jam, mold a cyl. shape plug of lead to your required weight and leave a hole in the middle the simple tap it, or mold (when you pour the lead) a big nut / wing nut etc into it so when you turn the rod it simply moves.... simple, and wont jam on you...... just an idea.......
