[PSUBS-MAILIST] Where to live

Hi Warren (et al),

I've just been catching up on the newsgroup and apologise for taking so long to respond to your request for suggestions re a place to move.

I think you asked Erik to comment on oz, but I saw no post in response.  I will make some comments tho.  Australia, comparitively (to USA) is quite cheap to live in most respects and the quality of life is very high.  We live a bit rougher tho, less in the way of indoor heating or cooling (except in offices).  Its often hard to get raw materials, equipment etc, but it gets there eventually :)  someone always has a friend of a friend or a 'disturbed' cousin that could help with whatever bizarre project you concoct :)

we invent lots of things (probably a product of never being able to get what we need).

the big shops are typically only open 9-5:30 and limited hours on weekends - but we get 4 weeks holiday a year, national health and livable unemployment benefits.  taxes are highish and we only get 5 free to air channels and about 50 on cable.  BUT we do get R rated stuff on free to air :)

The weather is great if you pick the right place and i think we have the most coast of any nation on earth.  large parts are good surf beaches and there is of course 'the reef'.  did i mention that all beaches are topless, many are nude and many have an unofficial nude section anyway.  pot smoking is legal (actually decriminialised) in 2 states and you can have a gay marriage without hassles (no inference here).

Buying property can be expensive in sydney and to a lesser extent the other major cities.  Rural, even coastal rural can be fairly cheap.  the more remote, the cheaper.

Work could be very easy or very difficult, depending on indusrty, time of year, government interference etc.  Most technical work is hard to get at present, but appears to be picking up.  I'm not sure if electronics has been hit as hard as myself in IT (I seem to recall you are into electronics).

'Restoride' i didn't understand.

btw, I often see a large sailboat being built in someones backyard or paddock.  People here often defy the cynics and create something a bit different.

immigration can be an issue, i don't know what you need to do to qualify, although one way is via points system.  the website should have details.  i know it includes things like profession (i think we favour chefs and motor mechanics among others).

i wouldn't suggest you move anywhere without visiting first.

Figured it wouldn't be that easy or it'd probably been done long ago ... thanks for the input.
