[PSUBS-MAILIST] Alternate Hull Construction?

Here's a question for those of you with metalworking knowledge & experience.  Given say a 36" diameter, 6'-long, 0.25"-thick steel hull with 0.25"x1.0" ribs, would it be possible/practical to:

Set ribs in "spine-like" central jig.
Lay on top of flat hull plate and tack weld in place.
Using "vast" numbers of high-test straps and hand-winches, bend hull around ribs, tack-welding as you go.
Weld longitudinal seam.
Continuous weld ribs to hull.
Normalize stresses via heat treatment.

Warm Regards
Shawn
