[PSUBS-MAILIST] "Wild Tech" Speed on Science Channel

Hi everyone,

There was a program on the Science Channel today called "Wild Tech" and the episode was about speed  in the air, on land and water, and underwater as well.  I thought the underwater part might be of interest to many of you.  The Science Channel often re-runs programs, so maybe they will show this one again.

The main idea of going extremely fast underwater seems to have to do with super cavitation: operating with the submarine inside a bubble it generates on its own.  This is done to reduce drag and make very high speeds possible.

Regarding this same subject, there is a very interesting article on Pat Regan's website entitled The Need for Speed where he talks about a project he is working on called the "Hypersub II".  There is also a good discussion thread between Pat and "Doc", the builder of the "Bionic Dolphin" submersible.  There seems to be a good-natured rivalry between the two to see who will build the fastest submarine.  From what I've read, they are both already building subs at this time with the goal of establishing a manned underwater speed record.  They are also seeking to persuade others to do the same.

Best,
