[PSUBS-MAILIST] New Used Pressure Hull...
Hey Guys,
I found the perfect "first sub" pressure hull.
However, I have no clue how deep to think of designing
it to go, as I do not really know how to calculate
this. Can anyone help me out here. If I can get some
fairly good ACTUAL numbers, then I can figure out how
much to buffer them for safety on these things. They
are already the right shape. About 4 ft in diameter,
and about 25 ft long. They have a flanged hatchway,
made for a bolt on door that is reinforced with extra
steel, and is around 18-20 inches in diameter, about
4-5 ft from one end. It stand perhaps 6-8 inches above
the top of the vessels top. The steel is at least 1
inch to 1.5 inches thick on the body, with 1/2-3/4
inch more welded around the hatch. It has elliptical
end caps, about 18 inches deep, with an outer radius
of maybe 8 inches. Nice and roundish, though not fully
hemispherical. If I used the specs for mild steel, can
anyone tell me a ballpark idea of how deep it might go
as is, and how much more could I get with heavy
reinforcing rings on the outside. Say a 1 inch thick
ring, 8 inches high, with a 4 inch flange on top,
every 12 inches along the length, and 12-14 1/2 inch
thick longitudinal ribs 4 inches high between each and
meeting at a point on the end caps.I am only looking
for some so-so numbers here, to see if I want to buy
one of these units. If I need to make some drawings or
get more specs, it will take a few days to do.
Thanks,
