You have been missing out on good visibility ;-)
A lot of submersibles that I have seen or been in, have a view port on
the bottom where you stick your face right up close, often in prone
for working with manipulators or for observation. I agree that you
wouldn't want to go fast with very limited visibility.
Where I live, a few hundred feet visibility is normal, you can see a long
way off.
