[PSUBS-MAILIST] extending the range of a sub

What do you guys think about this?   Has this been done before?

A seperate surface vessel containing only a diesel generator, fuel tanks and battery charger which is towed by the sub to the dive site?  In addition to the tow line there would be an electrical connection so the generator could be powering the sub all the way there.  

I was thinking the surface vessel would be disconnected when the sub dives but I suppose this isn't necessary.  Assuming the length of the tow line is less than the max diving depth, and the bouyancy of the surface vessel is right, and the lines connected properly, this could also be a solution to the problem of subs diving in water deeper than their max depth.
