Someone in a thread a while back was pondering alternatives to actual hull perforations for transmitting electrical data (e.g., inductive).  I've been pondering it and a possibility occurred to me ... what about an optical coupling?  I envision a small acrylic viewport with optical transceivers on each side.  Might have to make myself a prototype.  What form(s) would our theoretical signals be?  Digital or analog?  How many simultaneous paths/channels would be needed and which ones could share?  Thoughts?
