Newer fiber type materials and composites are great for some things. One
good method of determining if a material is a good choice for an application
is by using the Ashby Method. He has a book; and some software has also been
developed based off of his methods. He basically offers a very organized
approach to reasoning through what are the strengths and weaknesses of a
material. Instead of saying, "I think this material would be cool in a sub",
you would start at the other end and define what a sub is, what does it do,
how will it react and interact with anything and everything. Then with his
method you come up with a list a materials in a rated order. This approach
also takes into account the $, which is often overlooked.
