Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Psubbers, lurkers and CSIRO

Hi Jeff,

I agree, a fixed monitoring station is not a bad idea and would certainly be safer than a spotter plane that flies over every hour or so - although they can spot sharks coming a long way off and get the alarms ringing well before they hit the beaches.

It does remind me tho that i have a habit when scuba diving of hitching rides on sharks by grabbing their tails. they do try to turn around and bite, but they just can't reach - much the same as when u have a snake by the tail. of course these r just Port jackson sharks, and large wobbygones do get a bit stroppy when u try to do the same - but all of these are toothless and could at worst suck u to death :) Also there are so many of these the more skittish of us would be terrified. there is a large colony/cleaning ground for sharks just off gordon's bay, and the harbour is home to large numbers. pittwater is a breeding ground for the more dangerous varieties, but again - a human is probably needed to monitor and determine what is a risk and what is a 'safe' shark.

my ex brother-in-law was diving off malua bay (near batemans bay) and a gummy shark swallowed a girls arm. against all rules, they all abandoned her (he always was a bit of a scumbag) and climbed into the boat. she made it to the surface ok but had trouble climbing out of the water cuz the shark wouldnt let go until they thumped it a few times :) no damage to her, but i think the shark was a bit shaken hahaha

any non-aussies on the list wanna take a swim? heheheh :)

My current location is Biloela Qld but i am heading to Syd and then Canberra
after i get a couple of things organised. THe pesonal submersible idea is
also coupled with the miny airship early warning flotation platform at a
100 ft or so and or a raft camera surveillance or fish finder radar
submersible sounder device to maintain 24 hr surveillance on the predator
situation.
The CSIRO idea is interesting as well the curious email on Methane from
Warren Greenway
Interesting idea so we'll see what we can all come up with
thanks for the email
