I got the following leads on gyroscopes and compasses that I 
thought some people on the list would be interested in.

Magnetic Compass Chipset
The HMC1055 three-axis compass sensor set from Honeywell
provides X,Y,Z,Pitch,Roll all in a miniature LCC-8 package.

MEMS Gyroscope
The iMEMS ADXRS gyroscope from Analog Devices integrates both
an angular rate sensor and signal processing. The gyro consumes
5mA at 5V and delivers stable output even in the presence of noise.
The devices also is self-monitoring.
