That's a good point.   The older capsules -- Mercury, Gemini and
Apollo -- were lower-tech than they would be today.   All the 
electronics, for example, was quite simple: it was built up from
components, to a great extent.  Today, ICs would permit less
power to be used for electronics.

Have you ever looked at the design of the interior of the space 
capsules?  I have an old book about them, and the interior layout 
is useful for understanding just how small and efficient things 
can be!
