[PSUBS-MAILIST] RE:

I wouldn't even THINK of an un-reinforced propane tank, they're extremely thin skinned. They also tend to be long, which is poor from a structural perspective. Do yourself a favor, get a custom cylinder rolled and put stiffeners in or outside it (no difference structurally). I know the hull looks expensive, but in fact its one of the cheapest parts of a sub. The dome cost me more than the hull. The ring the dome seats in cost me more. The instrumentation costs more. The welding costs more. If I didn't do my own machining, that would have cost WAY more. So please, don't skimp on something which is has a fundamental safety impact and is so cheap to begin with.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get an answer or two. First, I would like to know if I made a sub out of a NEW propane tank, would I or should I put rings on the inside to strengthen it or would it be strong enough by itself? Also, the ballast tanks do they need to be able to withstand the pressure of water or can they be made out of a light material?
