That was also my expirence with the air tools underwater - after using
we blown
them short with oil - but the stopped working because bad corrosion
inside 
after some days. 
If you stopped to turn the air engine underwater - seewater can go via
the exaust 
air channel to the engine.. so an normal air engine should be converted
with a 
backslash vale on the exhaust side..
