I was recently showing that ad to a wooden boat builder friend of mine
who said that they wouldn't build a boat out of Birch unless it was
for somebody they didn't like (i.e. Birch isn't a very good marine
wood).  But, I've seen plenty of birch bark cannoes before so who knows.
