[PSUBS-MAILIST] Am I dreaming or what?
Hi, Jeff:
The submersible 'Aquarius' is owned by Nuytco Research Ltd. It is
at Deep Ocean Exploration & Research (DOER) for a video shoot tomorrow.
Nuytco works closely with DOER on the Sustainable Seas Expeditions and a
number of other projects, both scientific and commercial. Ian Griffith is
the general manager of DOER and is a skilled submersible pilot - Nuytco
often contracts him to pilot and/or supervise ops for the DeepWorkers, Dual
DeepWorkers, Aquarius, Deep Rover, etc., when our staff pilots are all on
other projects. Nice guy, good 'can-do' attitude and well thought of by the
customers. Ian and our lead pilot Jeff Heaton worked together during the
recent survey of a sunken vessel leaking oil in San Francisco harbor.
(Global Divers of Seattle put a sat team on the vessel to remove the oil -
Nuytco supplied some of the sat gear - good job!)
Aquarius will leave the Bay area to do a shoot in Washington and
then come back to the Vancouver pen. Another video shoot for a series is
planned before Xmas and then we'll get it ready to go to the High Arctic in
the early spring to dive on the wreck of the 'Breadalbane' the northermost
shipwreck ever found. Should be pretty neat - James Cameron is scheduled to
shoot using a Dual DeepWorker and Breadalbane will join the famous wrecks
he's been filming in the past 8 months ( 'Return to Titanic ', Bismarck,
etc.) You'll see them next year . A quick glimpse into the life of a
working submersible.
You can see the specs on 'Aquarius' on the Nuytco website at
www.nuytco.com - check the Hornby Island link also.
If you still want to photograph Aquarius - call Ian at
Doer . . .or his wife Liz ( Sylvia Earle's daughter) office # 510 530 9388
- he's pretty accomodating . . .you can tell him what a great guy I said
he was and that should put him in a good mood!
