Looking at his proposed design for 1893, Argonaut I/II and even
Argonaut Junior, one sees that he expected to keep his boats
positively bouyant while surfaced and while diving. However,
once submerged, he parked those boats on the bottom before
flooding to achieve negative buoyancy.

I'm beginning to suspect that perhaps he didn't feel comfortable
with the transition between positive and negative bouyancy. The
move of the CG and CB across each other might have had him
worried about capsize.

Lake might have arrived at the bathyscaphe had he not been
distracted by the military requirements of his submarines.
The potential of having the bathyscaphe a half-century
"early" is mind-boggling.
