RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Aluminum

Yes, I'm using Aluminum -- there are some pictures of the ring in the picture gallery. I was not too concerned about the grade because the ring is just ridiculously massive. I've seen fairly lightweight aluminum rings which have worked fine. For example on Sea Urchin. I went for Al because I could not afford the weight of steel in this particular component. The trick is to design the welds out of it, and if you find a way to do that, its a treat to machine. Aluminaut's pressure hull, for example, was bolted together instead of welded.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Aluminum

I think it was Alec who used aluminum for his front viewport ring. That
got me thinking, Ouch! I hate when that happens! Steel has different
grades, and subs specify only certain grades can be used. Aluminum also has
grades, but I've never heard any talk about using it on subs. Are there
pros and cons? What are your thoughts on this subject?
