RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Compression Fittings for thru-hull connectors

Title: Message
You know, we can sell you guys just the parts as needed. By that I mean, the motor housing without the shaft. Shaft separate if needed. Prop as needed. That way you don't pay for parts you don't need, and don't have to mess with pulling the shaft. We would have them drop shipped to you direct from Minn Kota. I expect Herve can sell you the parts as well.

All,

If we are talking about the threads in the mounting boss of the lower end case where the shaft attaches:

Regarding my MK R-101, Minn Kota told me it's a special tap, available from them so one can chase the threads of the loctite if he needs to.  They didn't say anything about a matching die-nut for threading a male fitting or the like, though.  I'm going to work in a while, anybody want to research that one?

Roger's right about getting the new shafts out; they are graphite composite, not steel like they used to be.  The old ones could be unscrewed with a monkey wrench no sweat.  I tried  that with my composite shaft and it began to crack and splinter immediately.  I was afraid  to put the blue-tip wrench to the mounting boss (didn't want to take a chance on roasting the innards), so I rough-sanded and wrapped the shaft with fiberglass, wrapped that with two turns of duct tape, chucked the rubber-padded case lightly in a brace (using only enough pressure to hold it steady without compressing the case), and then went back to work with my pipewrench, gently nudging it until it finally let go.  It took quite a while, but I did manage to get it out successfully.

Just letting you guys know it can be done without the torch, but it isn't easy.

Pat

If the threads that you are talking about are in the motor housing for
motorguid or minakota they are 1-20 straight threads, both minakota and
motorguide use red locktight to seal the treads.  To remove the motor
support shaft from the motor use some heat to free up the locktight, but
use caution ...don't get the motor to hot that you burn up the inside
of the motor.  On the motors that I supply, I machine out the straight threads to a 3/4 Female National Pipe Thread, so that it will fit a comercialy available compresion fitting.

I'm using a standard compression fitting for cable thru hull connectors but I'm having the darndest time trying to match the threads with a tap.  I assumed they were NPT (i.e. pipe thread) but was told that they have their own thread type.  Can anyone help me on a source for taps to thread a hole for these threads?
