Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Thru hull Seals
I am planning on using a double mechanical cartridge seal with Si Carb vs.
Si CArb Faces from Wartsila Lips Inc. (used to be John Crane In ). With
this type of seal, you design a envelope into the dry side of your stern
tube to receive the cartridge seal. A small pressurized reservoir is used
to supply seal oil between the faces of the seal at a pressure greater than
maximum ambient pressure. This causes any leakage (small) to be out the sea
side of the seal. An example of this type of seal would be the 5620PR which
is designed for a 1 inch shaft. The downside is that this is an expensive
bit of kit at $2300, but for my case, I needed a robust seal with no leakage
into the cabin and the ability to handle high rotational speeds.
Be careful of most of the stern tube seal assemblies. They are made for
boats and as such are designed for a relatively low differential pressure
across the seal. The above seal was designed for pumps with a large
differential pressure. Even so, I don't believe the above seal can handle
the DP you are talking about but they may have a double mechanical cartridge
seal that will handle the DP. It is worth a call.
At this depth, if you may want to look at using a hydraulic motor pump
combination driven off your main motor located inside the pressure hull.
This enables you to use two simple threaded penetraters to pass hydraulic
fluid through the hull wall rather than a rotating shaft. External
hydraulic motor would have to be able to handle high external pressures.
