(by the way... I´ve got my diploma also for naval engineering... but working now more in other fields..)
Generally speaking a jet propulsion is more usefull for higher speeds ... for vessels from about 40 kn or more.... because the slippage has to be reduced to an aceptable value otherwise the high speed water jet "makes only a hole in the water" and nothing happens...
For low speed purposes a good old ??? (this big wheel on the mississipi boats)
from the high skilled engineered props at the human powered subs you can learn a lot of best efficiency...
