As I said I have no current plans of building, but I am envisioning maybe 1-1.5 inch steel or some similar metal sphere. I don't know much about acrylic, what its pros and cons are, its formability, its availability, and such, so I just planned basic. But, since this is only a design, any material could be used for it–it is not dependant on any specific material at all.
