Batteries ARE silent, for a CSSX size sub it might make sense instead of a diesel for surface running and 
charging.
Myself, if I was going to build one that size my only regret about the diesel is that it wouldn't sound like a 
10 cyl. opposed piston Fairbanks Morse. That is one sweet sound, but it weighs something like 40,000 
lbs.
