Just a quick thought, but instead of letting a thin tube out of the sub while you pressure test it, just rig up a finely-tined pressure guage inside with a radio transmitter. As the pressure rises, you can see it on the surface. If you know what the internal volume of your sub is, you can take the volume and the pressure, and find out how much you hull is being compressed. Hopefully, you know what elasticity you are supposed to have in your hull, and if you cross it, you're most likely in trouble. ok, so it wan't too quick, but there ya go.

And even today, thermoclines (temperature inversions and such) are used by military subs to hide from other subs and surface vessels. The thermoclines effeciently reflect the sound on either side, pretty much defeating sonar.
