RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Movie hulls (was: Shipping from California)

The interior of the Russian sub from The Hunt for Red October was built
on a 60'x60' gimble in one of Paramount's buildings. That was
disassembled and trashed after filming. The gimble could go from a 30
deg left tilt to a 30 deg right tilt in about 5 seconds. I was on it for
some of the filming, including the "evasive maneuvers" when they were
avoiding the torpedo. You really had to hold on!

The exterior was built on two barges and was full size. Not sure what
happened to it, but it was probably destroyed.

In the movie you may remember when the Russian sub is communicating with
Baldwin (Ryan) and you see the Russian periscope? There is a SportSub
under that periscope with me in it. Lots of fun.

What ever happened to the deck and sail that was built for
The Hunt for Red October? Where are the sets for the other
movies we've seen recently?

And there was a Russian sub deck and sail used in a candy commercial
right about the time THFRO came out. What
was that?

Off and on, I play with the idea of a submarine-shaped
surface boat. A Type IX, for example, with its wide
beam and classic shape would be just about perfect.
The draft would be a bit much, though, if there were
anything below decks. Hmmm ......
