RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Shipping from California
Hi Ron and Herve -
I suspect from what the guy told me that I got the latter one that you
mentioned.
He told me that they never had motors on it ( after I bought it ), and that
it was a Mock-up with a working hatch, and that they had to complete the
hull, and that there was no battery box.
Mind you - this is all after I bought it when his wife was telling me that
it was the functional sportsub.
At any rate, I paid them $150.00 for whatever it is that they are sending me
and $1500.00 to have it crated and shipped to Minnesota.
He told me that the first time they put this one in the water, they "turned
the wrong knob and it nose-dived to the bottom."
Optically correct windows? Bonus, I guess.
I am still hoping that I will be able to convert it to a functional model.
It will arrive here some time next week.
I'll post photos when I get it and solicit advice from you guys before I
proceed.
Thanks-
Greg

There were actually 2 subs used in making the movie. The first was a
working 2 person SportSub with mock-up hatch as Herve suggests. The
second was a 3 person ResortSub mock-up with working hatch, that was not
even a complete hull. You can tell the difference in the movie by
looking at the number of dome windows on each side. The SportSub has a
single 9" dome while the ResortSub has a 9" and a 15" dome on each side.
They figured no one would notice, and I guess they were right. No one
has ever mentioned it to me anyways.
If you bought the SportSub, you got a great deal, though they refused
training and proceeded to sink the sub the first time they put it in the
water! Regardless, it still worked. If you got the ResortSub, you've got
some work to do, though it has really expensive 'optically correct'
windows in it, for whatever that is worth.
Hopefully you got the SportSub.
Ron

The Sportsub you purchased on ebay is actually a sport sub in which was
installed a top hatch for the needs of the movie. When they shot the
movie, the sub was placed on a underwater platform that would move up
and down to simulate submerging and surfacing. For the underwater shots
they used a real sport sub with a mock up hatch. Being opened in the
bottom the sportsub would not have buoyancy if the hatched was opened.
more recently i missed the sale of 2 x 50 Ft submarines, exact replica
of the U571 that were used in the movie U571. I dont know the dude who
bought them but for $5,000 a piece he made a real good deal as they can
be easily transformed in real submarines with an ambient pressure
design. Herve
