The Sportsub you purchased on ebay is actually a sport sub in which was
installed a top hatch for the needs of the movie.
When they shot the movie, the sub was placed on a underwater platform that
would move up and down to simulate submerging and surfacing. For the
underwater shots they used a real sport sub with a mock up hatch.
Being opened in the bottom the sportsub would not have buoyancy if the
hatched was opened.
more recently i missed the sale of 2 x 50 Ft submarines, exact replica of
the U571 that were used in the movie U571. I dont know the dude who bought
them but for $5,000 a piece he made a real good deal as they can be easily
transformed in real submarines with an ambient pressure design.
