Matt is exactly right. Helicopters were also used in the CBI 
Theatre of Operations during WW2 for medical EVAC.  Mark Steed

Army Air Forces conducted some limited vertical envelopments in 

the CBI (Merrill's Mauraders or an attached unit, I believe) in 

late 1944...
