Ah, I misunderstood what was being warned against.
As a free diving child, I knew that it was easier to hold my breath (inhaled at
the surface) down lower, than nearer the surface, and that when surfacing the
air would seem to explode out of my mouth. Now I know why it felt that way...
it was really happening, just so. Thanks! A puzzle of {number omitted} years
standing has been solved for me.
