Precisely - this is one of the clearest "non-deceptive" examples.  U-869 was
not engaged in anything "high level" - it was on a "routine" (if such a thing
exists) wartime patrol.  Apparently there was a communications SNAFU which was
never straightened out, in part because the 869 sank with all hands.

This kind of thing happens more often than anybody's military likes to admit. 
That's why most countries honor a representative "unknown" soldier: so much is
genuinely unknown and unknowable.

Let's get back to sub talk.  It's less depressing.
