In transiting the Canal a pilot is required. This is also the case for
larger vessels in many ports. The captain remains the captain and a
pilot does not normally take the helm. They advise on navigation of a
vessel in waters where their services are required. The captain remains
in control of the vessel but it would be extremely rare for a pilot's
advice to not be followed. In going through the Canal in my own vessel
the pilot never touched the wheel.
