I was merely commenting on the "facetted ball" approach, but your point is well taken.

What if there were a double hull, exterior hull smooth on the outside, interior hull smooth on the
inside.  Or maybe not smooth, but textured for traction.  Anyway, all gear placed between the
hulls, of course it would be tough to balance the weights so it rolls smoothly.  Controls,
drop-weights, whatever else needs to be accessible from one side or the other could be nested in
indentations.  View ports variously around the sphere.  

This is equally viable for the disk-with-training-wheels thing, too, I think.  Although by
"equally" I do not exclude the possibility that both are nonsense; just equally so.

Wow, drop weights.  They'll be on top, half of the time.  Best have at least two hatches too, in
case one is stuck in the silt on the bottom.
