Hi: 

For those who are interested a company in newengland (i think) that made
an AUV glider with a thermal engine. This thermal engine harnesses the energy
of the temperature difference between the surface and deep ocean to change
is relative density. In this mannor it could glide great
distances. However the horizontal velocity was never more than a few feet
per second. There's no reason why a sub with a similar yet much larger
system couldn't obtain higher velocities. and the only energy required
would be for life support and electronics.
