I'm just guessing here, but -- if they're using up water, so that we periodically have to add more to redilute the electrolyte... aren't they probably giving off oxygen as well? Or does that get stuck to the plates?

I know that when my house batteries are charging at a high rate, the compartment smells kinds sulfur-ish.
