Dunno. My thru-hulls are all shaft pens made of 316SS and each sporting a pair of o-rings on the inner diameter that contact the shaft. I think that's the way I'd go. If not, then how about TIGing a SS washer on top of the piece, then machine it to size and flatness after the welding is done?

Also, those drawings in Piccard's book, if available, would be mighty welcome. Your descriptions are great, but if you're a fab guy like I'm a fab guy, then you really can't talk without a pencil.  I'm already cooking up internal penetrators for my sub (anything to crank the book value up).

Man! I can't wait to get this one done and start on the next one.
