Good job Pat, and thanks for the information.
I've never had one of these things apart, but I have seen an exploded view diagram.  Tell me, are the armature shaft bearings supported by metal componenst in the lower unit? The drawing I saw shows only one endcap on the prop side and it appears to be metal.  The other end looks like the brush assembly which may or may not be metal.  The housing appears to be of inferior quality, and not at all strong.  I'm wondering how much of a job it would be to replace the housing with a stronger unit fabricated from a heavy gauge metal with hemispherical encaps?  In other words, just use the guts. This might also allow a means for attaching a small gear reduction unit and a better prop. You could then fill most of the voids with an epoxy resin.  Just a thought.
