Pat,

I recently ordered trolling motors too, and I ran into a really helpful guy named Jack Henson, who operates a trolling motor shop in Texas. He supplied me with just the separate components I needed rather than the entire trolling motor, and did so at a fraction of the cost. All components were new.

Most importantly, Jack was a source of good advice, and refered me to other folks like engineers at the manufacturers, or specialists on props. One thing he did was steer me away from Motorguides and towards Minnkotas (although he sells both brands). According to Jack, part of the Motorguide's speed control circuitry is inside the motor housing, and the extra heat leads to reliability problems. Give him a call, he is at 800-364-3949, or his web page is www.trollingmotorparts.com.

cheers,

Hi Alec!

If that difference between MOTORGUIDE and MINN KOTA motors you mentioned pertains to the particular unit I'm thinking of buying, it is something I'll want to take into consideration.  I'd prefer the controller inside with me.  Might be better to go with MK's recent 101# thrust unit.  Gotta research this one...

Muchly appreciate the heads-up and the link to Jack Henson; I'll put your Email into my SAVE file, and will be giving Jack a call in the near future.

Gee!  I guess you could say that, up till now, when it came to MOTORGUIDE trolling motors, I "didn't know Jack"! Nyerk-nyerk!    ;-)

Many mahalos!

VBR,

Pat
