For a full-size fish sub, I don't think Nitinol would cut it. Its too slow,
because it has to cool down in order to contract. I don't think you could
actually put the wire in water to cool it that way. The typical cycle time
is 2 seconds contraction, and then 12 seconds to contract.
Check out http://www.draper.com/tuna_web/vcuuv.htm to see someone who has
done a relatively large fish AUV (8 feet long, 300 lbs) using hydraulics.
They've even got a pretty cool online video of the thing swimming...
