Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Cause of the accident (was: Russian Sub Sunk)
Mike, I read your post below. Just a few comments. The periscope was noticed
in the up position. Therefore, I believe the accident happened just below
the surface with the periscope in the up position. If the damage happened
deeper, they would not have had the periscope up. I think it hit the bottom
as a result of the damage done at the surface.
I think the Bologna foundation (I don't spell too well) site may be in
error, but what do I know. "Pilot error" is great for airplanes, but this
sound like either friendly fire resulting in a torpedo explosion, or an on
board explosion, followed by a torpedo explosion. I would imagine the second
explosion was the charge on the torpedo, which would have done the most
damage. The question is: what caused the first explosion? Was it caused from
inside or outside the sub. Outside the sub could have been friendly fire
(surface ships were firing live rounds), or it could have been rammed from
outside (low probability).
As far as the scrubber cartridges, you may be right. The thieves would have
done everyone a favor had they stolen the torpedoes instead.

According the Bellona Foundation site, some think that it was a
"pilot error" (Bellona's choice of words) that caused the ship
to
hit the bottom. NATO reports say that NATO ships heard two
"detonations" at the time the sub sank. My money is on a
combination of the two.
>I doubt whether there are any scrubbers operating.
And if they are operating, is the scrubber chemical in them?
