Probably. Some of the rare-earth magnets are unbelievably
strong. Trolling motors operate with fairly fast RPM which would mean that
the torque for a given amount of Horsepower would be smaller than say the
same HP motor turning slowly. Until you experience two of the magnets in
proximity it is difficult to understand the attraction. I have taken small
ones around .3 or .4 inches in diameter and placed them on either side of
my hand and they are hold there and for me that's about an inch and a half
apart. Magnets like this but larger are a real hazard to handle because
they can brake fingers when they come together unexpectedly.
I'm not saying that this is the method (magnetic coupling) that I
endorse, but I think it has merit.
