Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] solid amine CO2 scrubbers

Potassium Superoxide has been considered as an alternative to CO2
Scrubber/Compressed O2 systems. It absorbs CO2 and produces O2. However, the
ratio of O2 production to CO2 absorption is too high. As I recall, it's an
unpleasantly exothermic reaction. Add in features like expensive, unstable
and hygroscopic (sp?), and those little green bottles of compressed O2 start
looking darn friendly.

In the recent thread concerning Life Support control systems, there have
been some concerns about excess O2 partial pressures. A lotta guys might
divide their O2 supply into several little green tanks instead of one giant
green tank. If you run the numbers, you might be surprised to find that you
can empty one little green tank inside your hull without increasing the O2
partial pressure to a toxic level. You have to look at the total system, and
make sure you've got isolation and crossover valves where you need them, but
it might make your mother sleep more soundly at night. - Joe
