Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Unconventional UW Propulsion YIKES!

Steve, you have a warped sense of humor but I had to laugh.( I'd make you a
spirulina (fresh form the rebreather) smoothie with some horse tranquilizer
in it before you got me :-) ) I'm sure I could think up a better method of
conserving oxygen though. You know, this could be the beginning of a thread
that saved someone's life one day.
What are the does and don'ts when you find yourself trapped on the bottom,
low on air (with a shipmate that looks low on air, hungry and unstable
! )and low on battery power. You have also not been able to get an emergency
message out.
You have used up all your ballast air without success.
Do you use your last HP oxygen to try for one last blow on the ballast tanks
(my sub would be piped up to be able to do this, is this common ?) or
conserve it.
Do you use your last battery power to use your HP water pump to pump out
the water in the bilge's. Your drop weight having already being released.

Seems like the decisions to be made, would be numerous if the sub was well
set up and you had drilled yourself on all the options. Of course, well
before the oxy ran out or the CO2 got too high, while I still had a
reasonably clear head, I would try to equalize the sub and head for the
surface in the morning so the search and rescue would have a better shot at
finding me.

I've read a lot of good ideas on the PSUB site for the emergency raising of
your sub, like the air bags gassed up by small explosives or a drop weight
that automatically releases at a predetermined depth. Or the motor/prop
units that can be released if they get fouled up on a net or whatever.
This could get some of the conservative minds thinking with creative flair
:-)

Regards,
Karl.
