Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 1atm vs ambient

Hi Craig,
I think the advantages of one over the other are relative to the user needs
which only you can assess. Heres my opinion !
Ambient sub advantages:
1) Lighter weight for trailering , manoeuvring etc,
2) Lower cost due to lighter construction and materials.
4) Potentially faster underwater, because of less displaced water due to
mass.

Ambient disadvantages:
1) Limited depth for limited time because diver is subject to normal scuba
tables.
1 Atmosphere advantages:
1) Controlled environment for crew
2) Able to go deeper and for longer periods

Disadvantages:
1) Greater cost to build and maintain
2) Higher level of skill required to build due to engineering standards to
withstand sea pressures
3) Danger of exceeding safe depth for hull
4) Harder to launch, maneouver etc.
5) In general, slower due pressure hull cylindrical requirements and loss of
hull form, which can be eliminated at great expense.

I'm sure others will have more to add or a different opinion. Me ? I'm no
expert, but I prefer I atmosphere subs.

Regards, Karl.
